[Video] Oscars coverage by Newsweek powered by StreamServer ( comments)

“We needed something fast, robust and real-time – something we could build on rapidly” – Mark Catalano – Newsweek

When it comes to the inside scoop on the Academy Awards, Newsweek has long been the authoritative source that people turn to. Its round tables, which have traditionally taken the form of articles and videos, have consistently garnered considerably high viewership despite noisy competition.

However, Newsweek’s digital development team knew that in order to continually grow interest in its round tables and retain its mantle of authority, it needed to create a differentiated and engaging experience that would capture the wealth of social media interaction and buzz surrounding the awards show.

Echo’s StreamServer enabled the team to have the flexibility necessary to quickly build a custom, live event dashboard for the Oscars that allows the Newsweek team to live blog simultaneously while users make picks and chat with each other regarding the contenders. The entire process was only a few weeks from idea conception-to-production, giving Newsweek a sharp strategic edge on a night which innumerable media sources are vying for attention.

Some quotes from the video

“We needed something fast, robust and real-time – something we could build on rapidly”

“We managed to get everything together in about 3 weeks”

“It’s a new way for us to reach out to our user base … and allows them to participate in our content in a deeper and more interesting way”

[Video] RealTidBits builds a company in 2 months on StreamServer ( comments)

As a startup CEO, Kelly Abbot from RealTidBits explains how they built a business in 2 months on Echo and found massive distribution and quick revenue through the app store.

Kelly’s company is a great example of how a small startup can focus on what they do best while outsourcing the plumbing and even some of the distribution concerns. It’s a fast track to success.

There is a growing number of app ideas on the wiki if you are a startup looking for great opportunities to build apps for media, agencies and other startups.

Some of our favorite quotes:

“They asked us to do some prototyping work and that was basically the beginning of a fast ride”

“It started by saying ‘we don’t need infrastructure’, Echo’s handling that. So we could just concentrate on building compelling user experiences… and making a better product that people want to use”

NYMag bets on Echo StreamServer for Real-time as a Service ( comments)

On stage at our StreamServer launch we showed great use cases by companies such as Sports Illustrated, Reuters, Newsweek, Interscope and NBC Universal.

This week NYMag joins their ranks by picking Echo for their real-time as a service.

NYMag used StreamServer to build a custom conversation system for their community.

This was not an off the shelf product that cannibalizes their audience and brand to a 3rd party social networking site. Rather it’s a differentiated experience their team assembled out of best-of-breed components. It allows them to control the behavior, own the content and user engagement and continue to innovate around the needs of their audience and editors.

Here are some screenshots.
