Upgrade to the Echo Email Notification System ( comments)

Today we shipped an upgrade to the Echo Email Notification System that should make it easier to use, more powerful and more effective for both end-users and moderators. Here are the highlights…

Improved Follow while Commenting Options

Users can now choose between getting notifications for the whole stream, or only replies to their comments, while making a comment using the follow pulldown.

Follow without Commenting

Users can now follow a stream without commenting. They can click on the ‘Admin’ pulldown on the top of every Echo Stream and click the follow menu item.

This will present a slightly modified follow panel in a lightbox.

Better Admin and Moderator controls

Admins are now able to control their personal site-wide notifications. These toggles apply to all streams on a given site to which they have admin/moderator rights. The screenshot below is found under ‘Notifications’ in the Admin Dashboard.

We hope this makes our notification system easier to use and more effective for your users and moderators! As always, we welcome your feedback.

Small tweaks to the comment form ( comments)

Just wanted to share that we are rolling out a minor tweak to the comment form to make the Login and Share buttons clearer. They have been renamed from ‘From’ and ‘To’ to ‘Login’ and ‘Share’.

Please note that if you have made customizations to those buttons, you may need to revisit those to ensure a smooth transition.

Echo and Google Buzz ( comments)

Today, Google has announced their latest product called ‘Google Buzz‘.

It is very much like FriendFeed in that it allows users to view, comment, like and share the social activities of their friends on the social web. Many (in fact most) of these activities involve some kind of interaction with content produced by 3rd party publishers.

All of this is done within Gmail. It’s an exciting new product, one that further strengthens the need and usefulness of Echo.

Whenever and wherever there is a conversation about content that is not occurring at the source – where the content was originally published – there is an opportunity for Echo to do its job. Echo’s first job is to re-assemble the global conversation about a piece of content back to the source. The goal is to ensure that the publisher’s site is the first, best place to view the complete conversation about their content.

So our answer to ‘Will Echo aggregate Google Buzz comments’ is the same as always; Echo will always seek out and re-assemble popular sources of conversations back to the publisher’s site.

So as Buzz matures and it’s adoption increases, we are sure that it too will become an important source of conversation and engagement, and we will find ways to bring that conversation into Echo for publishers.
